Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today dismissed criticism that the cabinet is too large, saying what is more important is its effectiveness.
The deputy prime minister said even the prime minister had admitted that the cabinet was large.
“However, effectiveness is the key factor. The ministers must prove they are effective,” said Muhyiddin today.
The Barisan National (BN) deputy chairman said expanding the cabinet could not be avoided, especially since MCA has agreed to return to the cabinet.
He noted that Gerakan, which was promised a seat in the cabinet if it won the Teluk Intan by-election, was also included.
“It cannot be avoided due to the circumstances after the last election, we had to form the cabinet without MCA and Gerekan,” he said.
Muhyiddin said the return of the two component parties was proof of the BN’s tested power-sharing concept.
He hoped their return to the cabinet will strengthen the coalition’s position.
Najib last night announced that the Cabinet reshuffle would include the reintroduction of MCA and Gerakan.
Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, the president of MCA was appointed the Minister of Transport. He is replacing Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein who previously held the post after the 13th general election.
Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong and MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong were appointed ministers in the Prime Minister’s Department.
